John is the last of the prophets before the messiah, speaking of the messiah to come. The only one who meets the messiah face to face.  He was a isolated and eccentric fellow, eating locust and wearing camels hair.  He was calling people to repentance and continuing the jewish tradition of baptism.  A call to symbolize this baptism and a look toward the future messiah.
