The Detroit Grand Prix is back!

This weekend is the Grand Prix in downtown Detroit. I’m pretty sure we are one of the few churches in America who have to do an abbreviated Sunday service because there are race cars going 190 mph just 100 feet from the front doors. We squeeze in a 45 minute eucharistic service while the cars idle in pit row. Our worship service is a live YouTube feed because our garage is closed, but the doors are open to anyone who will come (and already had parking for the race!)
Over the last 4 years, since Detroit brought the race back into the city streets from Belle Isle, I have enjoyed this opportunity to open our beautiful and historic sanctuary to the thousands of people walking by our doors. On Saturday, we will hand out water and give short tours while people come inside to take pictures or just sit quietly and pray (this Saturday from 12-4pm). We are humbled by the gift of this building passed down from those who worshiped here for the last 184 years, and we are so eager to share it with everyone.
The greatest gift we share with others, however, isn’t a tour of a historic building, but the love we can express to them. It’s a gift of prayer with those who walk through our door. It’s a gift of telling others about the love of God through Christ.
This is true in your everyday life, as well. Whether you are standing in line at the grocery store, driving in traffic, or hosting a holiday party, the greatest gift we can offer someone else is reflecting the love of God inside us.
This is why I John 4: 16-17 says, “God is love. When we take up permanent residence in a life of love, we live in God and God lives in us. This way, love becomes at home and mature in us…our standing in the world is identical with Christ’s” (Message version).
My prayer is that each of us who know God reflect him wherever we find ourselves: either at work, play, or doing the day to day tasks of life. This way each minute becomes an opportunity to share the love of Christ we know with others.
