Rom. 8:18 – For I reckon that the sufferings of this present time are not worthy to be compared with the glory which shall be revealed in us.
In the end the Tragedy of the Edmund Fitzgerald is about suffering, but it’s also about redemption. Too often we feel like the demonstration of God‘s love is that nothing bad happens to us. This is not what the Bible teaches and certainly not what is demonstrated in the stories of the people in the Bible, including Christ himself.
The demonstration of God‘s love is not that bad things don’t happen to you or your loved ones, or the sailors of the Edmund Fitzgerald. The demonstration of God’s love is that in the midst of a broken and falling world there is a God who can bring rest and peace, in the midst of a broken world. This comes through the reality of Christ’s redemption of humankind on the cross and the glory that is to come.
