Survey of the Torah (starting February 18)
The Torah, the first major collection in the Hebrew Bible, covers the books of Genesis, Exodus, Leviticus, Numbers, and Deuteronomy, or as the title from the Greek translation of the Old Testament puts it, the Pentateuch (= five books). History and theology are inextricably woven together in the fabric of these books. They describe the origins of the universe, the lives of the patriarchs, and the ministry of Moses, easily the most prominent figure in the early history of Israel. Especially, they focus upon the covenant God made with the Israelite nation, a covenant that would determine the vicissitudes of their future life in the land of Canaan, stretching all the way into the New Testament. It is not surprising that these five scrolls should eventually be dubbed the “Books of Moses.” These are the writings of which Jesus said not the least stroke of the pen would disappear until everything had reached fulfilment.
In this class, we will explore the primary narratives, laws, covenants, and promises that would define the people of God for centuries. As a survey, we will not be able to examine every detail, but the broad sweep of these books will be exhilarating, from the majestic poetry of creation to the flight of the Hebrew slaves from Egypt to the smoke and fire at Mt. Sinai, and on to Moses’ final speech to the people of Israel just before his death.
So, if you have a hankering for these ancient stories, stories that are still deeply treasured millennia after they happened, come join us for a tour of the opening books of the Bible.
